Final Piece - Refining my Idea

After practicing with some shapes I started to get an idea on the direction I wanted to go with my sculpture. I have some images here of some really basic models I made as I was deciding which shape to choose. I really liked the triangle pattern so I decided to draw a few sketched ideas on how I could expand on this and make it more detailed. Once I had a good idea on how I wanted the shape and patterns to be created I got started on making the sculpture.

Trying Different Shapes and Techniques

I tried some small scale basic sculptures following on from my sketched ideas. Playing with patterns and curves I first created some decorative petals which gave me some ideas which could be followed on into my final sculture. I have also tried creating some flower shapes using layers and origami, so far the layers are looking more natural.

Sketches - Starting ideas for Task 1

Here I have taken a couple of pictures just to show some sketches in progress, including rough designs for my flower patterns with leaf and petal design ideas. After these sketches I will do some small scale sculptures to try out some of these ideas.

Secondary Research - Eloise Corr Danch

Whilst looking into paper artists and flowers I discovered Eloise Corr Danch, who mostly works with fashion and magazines. In most of her advertisements and designs she uses paper flowers in all different forms and colours. I like some of the forms she has created by curving the paper and using more detail within the smaller flowers.

Primary Research - Photos of Flowers I have taken

When I had done some secondary research on the internet of some flowers and plants I went out and took some of my own photographs of floral patterns that could influence my designs and final sculpture. These are some images of patterns that stood out to me that could be created in a paper form.

Plants

After looking at flowers and petals I researched into plants and leaves which forms could be created using paper in similar techniques to the flowers. Leaves also have many different forms which vary in different curves sizes and lengths.

Flowers

After my workshops I could see that in some of my photos a few paper sculptures resembled flower like patterns or petals. Here I have collected a few images of flowers and petals in closer detail which could be used in further development of paper sculpture designs.

Richard Sweeney Workshop 3

In the third and final workshop with Richard Sweeney we had to develop and expand on our earlier designs and sculptures. Using the same shapes and curves from my last designs in the second workshop, I made new shapes by joining them at different sections to create a new form. The first images show the shapes cut and folded and the last four show the form I created after joining it together at different points.

Richard Sweeney Workshop 2

In our second workshop we again had Richard Sweeney showing us how to create new forms of folds and shapes to further help us in our project. These images show a couple of the techniques he showed us. The first one was difficult to create because of the inverted folding but when I had finished the final outcome looked really interesting. My second technique was using certain cuts to curve the paper into more complex shapes. This one turned out really nicely for me and it started to develop a repeating pattern that could be carried on.

Peter Callesen

Whilst researching into paper sculpting I found this artist. I think his work is great and really clever, his ideas range from simple folding designs to big complicated sculptures. I may try some of my own simple designs in this style. Images from: http://www.petercallesen.com
